Although this landscape had been very functional for these outdoor loving homeowners, they realized over the years that the plantings they originally installed had out grown their site conditions and they were now dreaming of a different use for the space.With an in-ground pool and established landscape to work around, F&S designed a seamless extension of their current hard-scape by incorporating new terraced paver patios with built-in details and a base for a new covered pavilion structure. A dry creek bed was introduced to help alleviate some consistent drainage issues, while additional plantings along the property lines will function as screening for the highly populated views. Go see F&S Design Studio's work at the Junior League Decorator Show house! We were fortunate to have had the opportunity to design and coordinate this year's show house.

The property surrounding the Show House was underutilized, overgrown and in need of a fresh look. Approximately 25% of the existing plant material has been removed. New walkways, lawn areas and plant material were introduced to add life and interest. The addition of outdoor lighting and sculpture was also included, adding that extra detail and ambiance.

F&S Design Studio created an outdoor living space for this residence in East Amherst. What was before an under utilized deck with very little shade is now an outdoor getaway for these homeowners.

Thin brick veneer creates a look of an urban courtyard while the adjustable SolaraPergola allows the space to be used even during unpleasant weather conditions. Low maintenance materials were key in this design. Composite decking, aluminum, brick and concrete create a unique setting for this outdoor entertainment space.

The Bayliss-Oshei Residence located at 360 Depew in Buffalo

Jennifer Fedeson of F&S Design Studio was chosen to help coordinate the landscape design and installation of the 2011 Junior League of Buffalo Show House. Clean up efforts have already taken place as a group of volunteers worked vigorously on removing shrubs and trees, relocating existing plant material, raking leaves and removing hard-scape material to be re-used on-site. Jennifer's plan includes new plantings, re-defined bed-lines and lawn areas that will bring this 1-acre site back to life.

Mercedes-Benz of Buffalo

Using a cold-hardy desert palette with modern planters and stainless steel accents, this design will enhance the modern architecture both indoors and out. Location: Our Lady of Victory National Shrine & Basilica Buffalo, New York

F&S Design Studio provided a new pavement and planting plan for the St. Joseph Garden with the addition of a tributary Father Baker statue. Decorative concrete details and formal plantings were incorporated to both function as well as accent the existing architecture. Site amenities including benches and lighting were also included in the plan. Construction will be completed for the new statue’s dedication being held October 7th, 2010.

A remarkable view of downtown Buffalo's skyline over the vast waters of Lake Erie is one view that should never go unappreciated. This design creates the maximum use of space for my client's needs and desires. Incorporated are the following: outdoor grilling/dining area, fire pit, spa, cable railing system, Ipe decking and an infinity edge pool, specifically designed to enhance the skyline view.

Traditional materials in a simple palette were used to act as a visual connection to the existing home. The contemporary styles of their interiors were extended outdoors with clean lines and an innovative use of materials. Plantings are placed to provide screening, making this outdoor oasis a more private experience for the homeowners and their guests.

F&S Design Studio provided conceptual through working documents for this design as well as project management services. Phase one of the installation had been completed in the spring of 2010.

Jennifer is the Principal Designer and co-owner of F&S Design Studio. She has 10 years of experience in landscape installation, project management and design. Jennifer's project experience varies greatly from both Western New York and Southern California. Because of Jennifer's travel's and education, she finds landscape design to be a major oversight in most construction projects. She believes that educating her clients in understanding the aesthetic, as well as the environmental benefits of the landscape is a critical part of her position in this field. Her experience includes a variety of residential projects including minor redesigns and consulting services to full master plans with installation costs nearing $150,000 plus. Personal attention is provided as is necessary for all residential projects. As the principal designer of her company, Jennifer represents F&S Design Studio as a leader in her field. Through active participation in local networking functions and associations, she strives to establish relationships with top vendors in order to provide her clients with the best quality products and service. She has also gained a strong clientele of local architects and developers whom have consulted with Jennifer to provide a fresh perspective for design to their projects. Commercial projects, including academic, urban parks, and historical renovations, are approximately half of her project scope. She is conscious of sustainable landscape practices and incorporates these elements wherever possible. With the abundance of sustainable resources and products available, Jennifer allows her clients the satisfaction of incorporating a low maintenance and site appropriate plan, without compromising the aesthetic quality of her designs.

Erie County Industrial Development Agency (ECIDA)

The Erie County Industrial Development Agency, located at 275 Oak Street in downtown Buffalo, has commissioned F&S Design Studio along with Architect David DeBoy, to provide a conceptual design for their façade updates and site improvements. Their location allowed our clients to engage the Downtown visitor by creating a sense of a ‘gateway’ to the Buffalo business district.

This, along with forward thinking design concepts including sustainable applications, products and plant materials, allowed us to present our clients with their new identity in the City of Buffalo. This project, as it moves forward in development and implementation, will truly represent our client’s involvement in the growth and sustainability of Erie County and the City of Buffalo.

Once again F&S Design Studio in conjunction with the Interior Design Association of WNY will be partaking in the Buffalo Home & Garden Show. 'Villa Vino' a home in Tuscany is the theme of this year's center show house.

F&S is responsible for designing and coordinating the exterior installation and we are ready to take it on. The space will include an outdoor fireplace, pergolas, dining area, water feature and much more. Theodore Roosevelt Site Landscape Installation

F&S Design Studio of Buffalo, NY, in collaboration with Urban Nature and Silver Lion Design, LTD. placed 2nd in ‘Re-Burbia’, an international design competition sponsored by Dwell Magazine and Inhabitat.com. The competition was dedicated to re-envisioning the suburbs, promoting sustainability, walkability and a sense of community. The design team will be featured in the December issue of Dwell magazine along with an editorial feature on Dwell.com and Inhabitat.com.

Our concept: ‘Entrepreneurbia’ Rezoning Suburbia for Self-Sustaining Life

The concept proposed by F&S Design Studio and group, simply abolishes poorly conceived zoning laws to attract forward-thinking small business owners and start-up companies to suburban areas. The result is a community of entrepreneurs who transform inefficient single-family dwellings and purely decorative landscape spaces into intelligent home-based businesses. From chic shops & showrooms to designer offices, award-winning restaurants, and even boutique farms, the new residents of Entrepreneurbia infuse once sterile suburbs with a distinctive sense of character & community.

Eventually, individual Entrepreneurbia communities become self-sustaining as entrepreneurs open profitable businesses that satisfy the needs of the community. This eliminates the need for cars to complete necessary daily activities. Meanwhile, public transit routes are updated, allowing residents to conveniently & sustainably travel between the Entrepreneurbia communities and into the urban cores.

Rigid zoning laws have created many of the problems typically associated with suburban sprawl. Possibly the largest of these problems is the segregation of residential and commercial spaces. The problem is fairly straight forward. When people do not live, work, shop and eat within walking distance of where they live, extensive transportation infrastructure is needed to allow people to regularly travel greater distances.

Jennifer Lee Fedeson, owner and lead designer of local design firm F&S Design Studio, saw the potential in these spaces as she provided the design concepts and renderings for each case study included in the project. Troy Silva, owner of Urban Nature, was the visionary of the highly talked about concept, while David Roberts, an extremely talented graphics designer and owner of Silver Lion Design, LTD., created an identity for each business with his talents for branding, as well as the layout of the design submittal itself. Urban Nature and Silver Lion Design Ltd. are both California based companies.

Tree Memorial for Andrew T. Conta

The Interior Design Association organized a Tree Planting in memory of Andrew T. Conta. Andrew was a former member of the IDA and not only a colleague to many of the association but a friend as well. Andrew passed away October 16th, 2008.

The planting took place at Chestnut Ridge park on June 20th. As you can see it was a very rainy day but that didn't stop us from planting this beautiful Japanese Lilac in memory of our dear friend. We miss you Andy and you'll always be remembered!

These spaces were designed and installed with a 'Green' concept in mind. A native plant palette and local materials can be incorporated into any outdoor space to help achieve a sustainable landscape design. Shade trees on the south side of your home will alleviate some of the high cooling costs in the hot summers, while evergreens create a barrier for the cold winter winds.

A rain garden is incorporated into the design to provide a 'green' alternative to storm water management. We also incorporated some recycled, decorative garden art and natural wood furniture made of Ipe (a sustainable Brazilian hardwood).

F&S Design Studio, Helping Revitalize Downtown North Tonawanda

A historic building in downtown North Tonawanda was recently brought back to life. F&S Design Studio was fortunate to be involved with the Webster Street project from conceptual design through project management. The façade renovations are now complete and the transformation has truly made this storefront one-of-a-kind. The project, located at 79-81 and 84 Webster Street, started in November of 2008 and is now 95% complete.

There has been a spur of development in downtown North Tonawanda, and the Partners in Art, Studios at Partners in Art, and Lou’s Restaurant façades were in desperate need of renovations. Dean Sutton Architects provided the building site analysis and design, F&S Design Studio provided the finish schedule and signage design, and Fedeson & Son Construction, Inc. was the general contractor for the project.

F&S developed a finish schedule including paint colors, awning fabric selection, custom scroll work and signage. The overall design was inspired by historical photos of the early 1900’s building. F&S Design Studio’s services were retained by Lumber City Development Corporation (LCDC), a highly active participant in the rebirth of this historic district. LCDC obtained a 50% matching grant from the State of New York to help complete this historical renovation project.

F&S Design Studio has been involved in several other projects in this historical area including the temporary façade treatment for 64 Webster Street, plantings at Gateway Harbor Park, and conceptual signage proposals for recent up-and-coming business in the area. The design studio is actively working on both residential and commercial projects throughout Western New York.

The Green Cleaners, a new eco-friendly cleaner that is opening locations throughout WNY needed a fresh, contemporary and “green” image. F&S Design in conjunction with Nest Interiors provided the company with image and branding concepts for eco-friendly interior finishes and exterior facade treatments for their several proposed drop locations around WNY, as well as their main manufacturing plant located in the city of Buffalo.

Years of weather and use have taken it’s toll on this existing outdoor courtyard. A design was created following a specific use of space as determined for both leisure and entertainment. A pergola with a retractable awning feature was proposed for some much needed shade in this full sun exposed site, while giving my clients the freedom to allow sun into the home when desired. The finishes were specifically chosen to blend with the existing architectural details of the home and designed to both acknowledge the original architecture while introducing a contemporary flare. F&S provided both conceptual and working documents for this design. Planned installation will be scheduled for spring of 2009.

This one-of-a-kind design allows my clients to maximize their waterfront views. A retaining wall was needed to establish the appropriate grade and plantings were strategically placed to soften the new patio. Trees were also placed to screen the new patio from the adjacent properties while creating a framing effect for both the home and the water view. Mass plantings of both low maintenance and deer-resistant materials were used in this plan. A parking area was also implemented to allow for rear parking and to accommodate the addition of future renovations, including a 3-car garage. F&S provided conceptual through working documents as well as project management services for the soft-scape installation of this design.

This existing deck was in desperate need of a renovation, although, our clients liked the functional use of space, including the ample amount of storage underneath. Using a composite material made to outlast the home itself, and black powder-coated metal accents, this deck compliments the architecture of the home while functions as an extension from indoors-out. F&S provided the conceptual design including a dimension plan for the client who turned it over to their trusted contractor to implement. The original design was adjusted to fit the wants and needs of the client and the deck will now be utilized to the fullest extent of its potential.

F&S Design Studio will be participating in the 2008 Horizon's Showhouse, designing the landscape for the David Homes Model house this year. This Buffalo Architectural gem was in need of updating. A 'California' landscape was the inspiration for this design, including various species of ornamental grasses, succulents, clean lines and boulder accents. Check it out at 19 Saybrooke Ave., Buffalo.

Make & Take Presentations

We are very excited to have taken part in the 2008 Buffalo Home and Garden Show's 2nd annual Make 'n' Take presentation. During 3 sessions, 120 lucky visitors were able to take home their very own Contempoary Indoor Succulent Arrangments! Hope everyone had as great of a time as we did, and are enjoying their gift!

As a member of the IDA (Interior Design Association), F&S Design Studio created a unique "Rain Chain Water Feature", hung from a custom cedar pergola and surrounded by a wall of cedar with decorative composite inserts. An indoor plant palette, boulders and gravel dressing completed this space to create a one of a kind experience for our visitors at the show!
